Still "Black hair" even in the White Office?

Permeating through to the White House is even so the negative connotation of Black Women's natural hair and the variety in which it is represented.

Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, during her time in the White House, became subject herself to the imperative gaze and limiting structure of America's predominant belief in racial prejudice. Recently just opening up about some struggles faced during her time as the First Lady, Mrs. Obama explains that while in the White House, she personally didn't feel comfortable wearing natural hairstyles. The reason for this, she denotes, is that there were various attempts from those around them to alter herself and her husband, the first Black government in America, into "others" [1].

Proceeding as a result, Mrs. Obama noted that her time spent at the residence of the presidency was significantly invested in overcoming these barriers which clouded America's perceptions of how individuals from a certain minority - Black people, operated and maneuvered [1].

A response to this was exemplified through the former First Lady's presentation of her hair in the White House and the predominantly white spaces she had become au fait with. Michelle Obama at the time thus decided mindfully, to cede to the parameters of Westernized normativeness. She wore her hair in the prescribed way for the major part of her journey through the American administration, in a straight state.

As aforementioned, when worn in its natural state, Black women's hair is oftentimes denoted to be uncontrollable and therefore assessed through an already tinted lens. Mrs. Obama's reason for wearing her hair straight through her season in the White House was not because she was vulnerable or unable to defend herself - no. The reason she acted strategically in this way, owed to the fact that she had her eyes set on a much higher goal. In an interview with Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Obama revealed that the people within these white spaces and rooms of power were only just, through her and her family, having their first encounter with Black people and because of this, were unable to promptly grasp the contexture and uniqueness of Black culture [1].

During their tenure, the Obamas had collectively fixed their focus on the prime tasks they had at hand, Mrs. Obama herself was fully committed and decided to limit anything that would be indicated or pointed out by the people of America as a distraction, her self-expression through differing hairstyles included.
